The Mayo Window.

The Earl of Mayo was assassinated in the Andaman Islands while serving as Viceroy of India. This stained glass window, dedicated to him, depicts two very different scenes. The top section of the window depicts the moment of the stoning of the Apostle Stephen, “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” as the Bible states, and is dedicated to the “noble army of martyrs”. Stephen’s faith was so strong that he was able to ask God’s forgiveness for those who were about to kill him. He trusted in God. His salvation was assured. The caption reminds us of his words, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.

The bottom section of the window dedicated to the “Glorious Company of the Apostles” depicts six of the Apostles, Bartholomew, Thomas, Peter, Paul, John and James. Five of these were the original disciples of Jesus. Paul was later chosen by Jesus as he travelled on the road to Damascus. What is really interesting is the powerful image of faith that lays behind the picture - the journey of faith for Paul. You see, Paul was present at the stoning of Stephen. He was known as Saul, a devout Pharisee. He was dedicated to destroying anything and anyone associated with Christianity. However, in the Book of Acts, Chapter 9 we see Saul’s dramatic conversion to Christianity. We see how his life changed, so much so that he is known to this day as Saint Paul, one of the “Glorious Company of the Apostles”.
